A Brief History of Tree Tops Caravan Park
In the Beginning
Tree Tops wasn’t always a caravan park! It started life as a pig and turkey farm, owned and run by current owner Maureen Walker’s parents, John and Sian Owen.
When swine flu hit the farm in the late 1950s, and they lost their 300 pigs (there were no government subsidies for farmers in those days), John and Sian were granted a licence for Tree Tops in 1960, after they decided to diversify and turn their farm into a holiday caravan park.
They started with approximately 55 plots (now known as the Old Park area of Tree Tops) and created one of the first coastal caravan parks in North Wales. Over the years, they bought extra land and expanded Old Park.
Tree Tops was the first park on the North Wales coast to have a 3 amp electric supply to every caravan, and toilets inside the caravans!
The Park was always a model park, and in the early 1970s, we were awarded second place in the Wales in Bloom Best Park in Wales awards. A sign of things to come – to date (2025), we have won 32 Wales in Bloom awards in our class!
Did you know… Tree Tops was named after Treetops in Aberdare National Park in Kenya, where the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited in 1952, and the Princess learned she had become Queen Elizabeth II!
Making changes
In the mid-1980s, John and Sian retired from running the Park and sold Tree Tops to their daughter, Maureen, and her brother.
They set about making improvements, and ploughed all the profits back into the park, tarmacing roads and car parks, installing street lighting and replacing lots of the caravan bases that had become cracked over the years.
Maureen took care of the day-to-day running of the Park, while her brother bought, sold, and moved the caravans, before selling his share of the Park to Maureen.
The 1990s saw more developments, with the original shop replaced with a new Reception building.
Maureen’s husband, Harry, took early retirement and joined the Tree Tops team in 1999.
Maureen & Harry set about making Tree Tops bigger and better than ever, and a series of expansions followed, with the latest opening in 2016.
John and Sian’s original lodge (where they lived whilst running Tree Tops) was replaced with the current office building.
Over the years, further land was purchased, and the Parc Newydd and Ynys Hir areas of the Park were opened in 2005 and 2016, respectively. Both areas have flourished over the years and afford our Tree Toppers stunning sea views!
Gorgeous Gardens & Conservation
As well as adding to the number of plots, Maureen took on the not-so-small task of creating beautiful, landscaped, award-winning gardens for our Tree Toppers to enjoy.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our brilliant team, Tree Tops has held a 5-star rating since the early 1990s, and we’ve been winning Wales in Bloom awards (most of them Gold!) since 1992!
We also hold the David Bellamy Conservation Award and take part in the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature scheme each year.
Nature and conservation are high priorities for us, and we do as much as we can to protect and provide for the local wildlife.
We’ve created wildlife habitats and have several bird and bat boxes, as well as bug hotels, around the Park.
We also work with a local beekeeper, who keeps beehives at Tree Tops, and whose bees produce the most delicious honey!
Continuing the Tradition
All this, and more, continues under the management and guidance of Maureen and Harry’s son, Andy, who joined the Park in 2006.
We’re continually making improvements to benefit our Tree Toppers and the Park, from seating and events areas to the latest addition to the Team – a robo-mower!
2026 will see us celebrating 10 years since the opening of Ynys Hir and 20 years since Andy joined the Tree Tops Team!
Our family is dedicated to making Tree Tops Caravan Park a very special place for our Tree Toppers and their families to enjoy their caravan holidays in North Wales year after year.
